  Bessie V.  McKay

Ipswich – Mrs. McKay was born in Ipswich on September 10, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Leonides Vlahos and Garafalia (Pappalimberis) Vlahos. She was educated in Ipswich schools and was a graduate of the Class of 1946. Following graduation she attended Lynn Burdette, graduating in 1948. After college she started a life long career with the Division of Employment and Training. Mrs. McKay was the wife of the late Clifton McKay, co-founder of Val-Mac construction company. A life long, active member of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Ipswich. In 2012 she was honored for 50 years of service in the Church Choir. Bessie was also a GOYA advisor for many years. In addition she was a member of the Alpha Omega Sorority, serving as President and Treasurer. She was also a member of the Melissa Society. She was also a life long member of the Logganiko Society, serving many years on the board of directors. She was also a member of the North Shore Hellenic Women’s Guild where she served a term as treasurer and was the Sunshine Girl. For several years Mrs. McKay was a volunteer in the information booth in Ipswich. Other interests included being an avid fan of Boston sports teams, afternoons at Crane Beach and knitting. Mrs. McKay is survived by her son William C. McKay of Ipswich, her sister Ethel Sayward of Ipswich as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Arthur Vlahos and her 3 sisters: Mary Vlahos, Angela Lachman and Ann McCraven, all formerly of Ipswich. A funeral service will be held Friday April 21st. at 10:00 A.M. at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church 8 Lafayette Road, Ipswich. Burial will follow in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery 29 Town Farm Road, Ipswich. Visiting hours to be held Thursday the 20th. from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. in the Morris Funeral Home 45 North Main Street, Ipswich, relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
